Kapton Tape Temperature Rating: Understanding Heat Resistance and Adhesive Limits
A Kapton tape temperature rating describes a specific tape construction. To choose a tape for a heated process, check the adhesive-backed product's rating together with exposure time, the surface being masked and removal requirements.
APT Kapton Polyimide Tape has an operating temperature rating of 260°C (500°F). Its 1.0 mil polyimide film backing and silicone adhesive produce a total tape thickness of 2.5 mil. These are the specifications for this APT product, not a universal rating for every polyimide tape.
Kapton film and Kapton tape have different specifications
Kapton® is a brand of polyimide film. A finished tape combines film with an adhesive, and sometimes other layers. The film's properties alone do not establish how the assembled tape will bond, hold or release during a heat cycle.
When researching Kapton tape heat resistance, check whether a temperature figure refers to bare film, a completed tape, a brief exposure or an extended service condition. A higher figure for bare film does not raise the operating limit of the tape you are buying.
What does 260°C (500°F) mean for this APT tape?
Use 260°C (500°F) as the listed operating temperature rating for APT Kapton Polyimide Tape. It is not a promise of unlimited exposure at that temperature or guaranteed clean removal on every surface.
For example, a process set to 250°C is below the listed rating, but that comparison alone does not qualify the application. The actual part temperature, duration, repeated cycles, surface finish and removal conditions still need evaluation. If a process exceeds the listed tape rating, request a suitable product recommendation before proceeding.

Shop Kapton TapeMatch the tape to your heat cycle
- Record actual temperature exposure. Include heating, dwell and cooling stages, and any repeated passes. An equipment setpoint may differ from the temperature at the taped surface.
- Identify the surface. Note the material, coating, texture and any cleaning products or process chemicals that will contact the tape.
- Define the masking result. Decide which area must remain protected and whether tape edges, thickness or residue would affect the next operation.
- Test the full process. Apply the tape to a representative part and evaluate adhesion, edge condition and removal using the intended production cycle.
Heat resistance does not guarantee residue-free removal
Silicone adhesive is part of this product's construction, but residue depends on the entire application. Surface preparation, heat exposure and removal conditions can change the result. Check the surface after removal before committing a full batch.
Likewise, electrical insulation and thermal performance describe different properties. A heat-resistant tape does not actively cool an electronic component, and its temperature rating does not establish an electrical voltage rating.
Common temperature questions
Can I use a bare-film temperature figure for adhesive-backed tape?
No. Use the specification for the finished tape. The adhesive and the required bonding or removal performance are part of the selection.
Is 1 mil the thickness of the whole tape?
For this APT product, 1.0 mil refers to the film backing. The complete tape, including adhesive, is 2.5 mil thick.
What information should I provide when requesting guidance?
Send the surface material, dimensions, actual temperature, exposure duration, number of cycles and removal requirements. Include any electrical or chemical requirements that matter to the process.
Choose a width for your application
Review Kapton tape specifications and available widths, then select the coverage needed for your part. For help evaluating a heat cycle or a custom size, contact APT with your operating requirements.
