How to Mask Metal Parts for Powder Coating

Good powder coating masking starts before the part enters the booth. Define the surfaces that must remain uncoated, choose a tape for the complete process and confirm the result on a representative part. This guide walks through the practical checks for masking metal parts with polyester tape.

For material and adhesive basics, read our polyester tape selection guide. To choose a roll width, see APT Polyester Powder Coating Tape.

1. Define the areas that must remain uncoated

Use the drawing or work instruction to identify the masking boundary. Contact faces, mating surfaces and other protected areas may have different dimensional requirements. Decide whether a straight strip, a shape cut to length or a pre-cut circular mask best fits each feature.

Choose the tape width around the required boundary, not simply the overall size of the part. APT polyester rolls are available in multiple widths with a 72-yard roll length. For repeated circles, compare Polyester Masking Die Cuts.

2. Check the tape against the coating cycle

Record the actual part temperature, time at temperature, cleaning or pretreatment exposure and number of heating cycles. Check these against current technical information for the exact tape. Oven settings alone do not describe every condition the tape experiences.

APT Polyester Powder Coating Tape rolls list a maximum operating temperature of 200°C (392°F). The separate polyester die-cut product lists 204°C (400°F). Confirm dwell time and removal conditions for the selected product; these ratings should not be treated as interchangeable.

3. Prepare the metal surface

Follow the surface preparation requirements for the part and coating system. The area receiving tape should be clean and dry, without loose dust, oil or cleaning residue that could interfere with adhesion. Use a cleaning method compatible with the surface and allow it to dry before masking.

If pretreatment occurs after masking, confirm that the tape is suitable for those chemicals and process steps. Test adhesion on the actual substrate and finish instead of relying only on an adhesion-to-steel specification.

4. Apply the tape and check the masking edge

Place the strip on the intended boundary and press it into contact along its length, paying attention to edges and ends. Avoid wrinkles, unsupported bridges or lifted edges. Check the fit around corners and changes in surface shape before coating.

Keep unnecessary overlaps away from critical edges. An overlap adds thickness, so include it when evaluating the mask profile. APT's roll tape has a 2 mil film backing and 3.5 mil total thickness including adhesive.

5. Run a representative coating trial

Use the actual part or an equivalent sample and follow the full intended process. Inspect whether the mask remains in place during handling and heating. After removal, compare the coating boundary and protected surface with your acceptance requirements.

Record the tape product, width, surface preparation, part temperature and dwell time so that a successful trial can be repeated. Recheck the process when these conditions change.

6. Remove the mask under approved conditions

Follow the removal conditions established for the tape and coating process. Confirm the appropriate stage, surface temperature and handling method with the relevant technical guidance. There is no single removal timing that suits every coating and tape combination.

Check for adhesive residue, coating damage, ragged edges and unwanted coating in protected areas. If results are inconsistent, review the complete process before changing tape or removal technique.

Common masking problems to investigate

Observed problem Checks to make
Edges lift before or during the cycle Surface cleanliness, dryness, application contact, surface shape and process compatibility.
Coating reaches a protected area Mask placement, lifted edges, wrinkles, gaps and the specified masking boundary.
Residue remains after removal Product selection, actual temperature, dwell time, repeated cycles and removal conditions.
The coating edge is damaged Removal stage and method, coating condition, tape overlaps and the approved work instruction.

Choose the tape and format for your part

Use polyester roll tape for continuous masking edges and shapes cut to length. Compare pre-cut polyester masks for repeated circular areas. If process conditions fall outside the selected product's specification, review other options in our High Temperature Masking Tape collection.
