UHMW Tape Thickness: Choosing 5 Mil vs 10 Mil
Choosing UHMW tape starts with two practical questions: how much space is available, and what will rub against the tape? A thicker backing adds more polymer at the contact surface, but it also takes up more clearance.
For APT UHMW Tape, the 5 mil and 10 mil options describe the backing thickness. The installed tape is thicker because it also includes adhesive. That distinction matters on a close-fitting slide, guide or other moving interface.
What is UHMW tape used for?
UHMW tape uses ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene. In tape form, the polymer provides a low-friction, abrasion-resistant contact surface, while the adhesive holds it against the supporting part.
APT's UHMW tape uses permanent acrylic adhesive and is intended for sliding and wear-protection applications. It can be considered where two surfaces rub together, subject to checking the substrate, load, movement and environment. It is a surface layer; the underlying part still has to provide the required structural support.
5 mil vs 10 mil: backing and total thickness
One mil equals 0.001 inch. APT lists the following dimensions:
- 5 mil backing: 0.005-inch UHMW film, with a total tape thickness of 7 mil, or 0.007 inch
- 10 mil backing: 0.010-inch UHMW film, with a total tape thickness of 12 mil, or 0.012 inch
Use the total tape thickness when estimating installed clearance. The removable release liner is not part of the installed assembly. Check the current product specification and any required tolerances before finalizing a close-fitting design.
A simple clearance example
Suppose a sliding assembly has 0.010 inch of available gap at the surface where you plan to apply one layer of tape:
- The 5 mil backing option adds 0.007 inch in total, leaving a nominal 0.003-inch gap
- The 10 mil backing option adds 0.012 inch in total, which exceeds the available gap by 0.002 inch
This is a dimensional illustration, not a fit guarantee. Manufacturing tolerances, surface irregularities and movement still matter. If tape is applied to both opposing surfaces, include both layers in the calculation. An overlap also creates a local increase in thickness.
When to evaluate the thinner backing
The 5 mil backing option is a sensible starting point when clearance is limited and a relatively thin low-friction surface is needed. Check the full travel of the moving part: enough room at one end does not establish enough room everywhere.
A thin layer should still be tested under the intended load and motion. If the tape wears through or an edge lifts, review the contact geometry, preparation and operating conditions before simply changing thickness.
When to evaluate the thicker backing
The 10 mil backing option provides more UHMW material above the adhesive. It may be worth evaluating when the assembly has sufficient clearance and additional backing thickness is useful at the wear surface.
Twice the backing thickness does not establish twice the service life or load capacity. Wear depends on the opposing surface, pressure, speed, debris and movement. Compare the options in a representative application test.
Check these details before application
- Measure the interface. Record the available gap, contact width and travel. Identify joints, corners and areas where a tape edge could be caught.
- Confirm adhesive compatibility. Consider the actual substrate and its finish. A tape's adhesion-to-steel test value does not predict its bond to every plastic, coating or other surface.
- Prepare and trial a small area. Use a compatible cleaning method, allow the surface to dry, and apply firm, even pressure according to the tape's guidance. Follow any supplier-recommended waiting time before load testing.
- Check operating requirements. Ask for product-specific guidance where temperature, chemicals, food contact or another special requirement matters. The material name alone does not establish approval for that use.
- Test through normal movement. Inspect for binding, edge lift and wear, then establish an inspection or replacement interval appropriate to the application.
Choose a size to fit the contact area
APT lists 0.5-inch, 1-inch and 2-inch widths, with roll lengths depending on the option selected. Review the UHMW tape size options and specifications before ordering.
If you need help choosing a thickness or width, send APT your application details, including the available clearance, substrate, contact area and operating conditions. Those details are more useful than selecting on backing thickness alone.
