How to Choose PTFE Tape for Heat Sealers

Choose PTFE tape for a heat sealer by matching the equipment's specified construction, adhesive, total thickness and width. Then confirm the finished tape's operating limits against the actual sealing cycle. “Heat-resistant tape” is too broad a description for a reliable replacement decision.

PTFE glass cloth tape can provide a release surface on compatible sealing equipment, helping the processed material separate from the covered surface. Tape selection should support the machine's specified operation rather than compensate for an equipment fault or an unsuitable process setting.

1. Identify the original tape construction

Find the equipment manual, replacement part specification or supplier drawing. Record whether the machine requires adhesive-backed PTFE glass cloth, a film construction, an adhesive-free strip or a part with a specified adhesive pattern.

Do not assume that every brown release strip is the same product. Two materials can look similar while differing in backing, adhesive placement or total thickness. If the original part cannot be identified, send the equipment model and clear photographs to the supplier before ordering.

2. Check the adhesive and where it belongs

APT's Teflon Glass Cloth Tape has a PTFE-impregnated fiberglass backing and silicone adhesive on one side. That construction is relevant only where the equipment permits an adhesive-backed covering.

Check the attachment surface and required adhesive coverage. A strip that must remain adhesive-free in the active area should not be replaced with a fully adhesive-backed tape without the equipment manufacturer's confirmation. Compare the replacement with the specified part before installation.

3. Use total thickness when checking fit

Total tape thickness includes the backing and adhesive. A backing-only measurement does not describe the installed layer. Check whether a quoted dimension refers to the backing or the complete tape, and account for any overlaps in the equipment's specified arrangement.

APT's listed total thickness for this product is 0.007 inch, or 7 mil, approximately 0.178 mm. Select that thickness only when it matches the equipment requirement. A thicker tape is not automatically a better choice, and thickness alone does not establish service life or seal quality.

4. Match width and roll length

Measure the specified coverage area and compare it with the original replacement-part dimensions. The tape should fit the intended surface without interfering with movement, guides or other machine components.

The current APT listing offers 1-inch and 2-inch widths, each with 36 yards of tape. Confirm that a listed width matches the required coverage. If you need a different dimension, ask APT about a custom-size order rather than assuming one is in stock.

5. Confirm temperature and exposure duration

Request the verified operating range for the complete tape construction. Specify whether exposure is continuous or intermittent and describe the process cycle. The PTFE material name, another manufacturer's rating or a melting-temperature figure does not establish this tape's allowable service temperature.

Also provide the material being sealed and any cleaning agents or other process exposure. Confirm these requirements against product-specific data before specifying the tape.

Check Information to confirm
Equipment Manufacturer, model and replacement-part instructions
Construction Glass cloth or film; required adhesive coverage
Dimensions Width, total thickness and replacement length
Process Operating temperature, exposure duration and sealing cycle
Contact conditions Processed material, attachment surface and cleaning method
Acceptance Manufacturer's inspection and seal-quality requirements

Replacement and trial checks

Follow the equipment manufacturer's shutdown, isolation and maintenance procedure before replacing a covering. Use its approved cleaning method and application instructions. Do not place adhesive or overlaps where the specified replacement arrangement excludes them.

After installation, inspect the tape for wrinkles, raised edges or interference. Run a representative trial according to the machine's instructions and check material release and seal quality against your normal acceptance criteria. If sticking or sealing problems continue, review the machine condition and process settings with the equipment supplier.

PTFE heat-sealing tape questions

Is PTFE tape the same as a heat-sealer heating element?

No. A release covering and a heating element perform different jobs. Identify the actual replacement part from the equipment documentation.

Can I use any high-temperature tape?

No. Temperature resistance alone does not establish the required release surface, adhesive arrangement, thickness or fit.

How often should I replace heat-sealer tape?

Use the equipment's inspection and maintenance guidance. Establish replacement criteria from your process rather than assuming a fixed number of cycles applies to every tape and machine.
