What Is Polyester Tape? Uses and Powder Coating Selection Guide

Polyester tape is an adhesive tape made with a polyester film backing. For powder coating, the important details are the adhesive, film thickness and performance through the coating cycle. Choosing by the word “polyester” alone does not establish whether a tape will suit your process.

This guide explains what polyester film tape is used for and how to select a masking roll or pre-cut mask. For available roll sizes, see APT Polyester Powder Coating Tape.

What is polyester film tape?

Polyester film tape combines a thin film backing with an adhesive layer. APT's powder coating roll uses silicone adhesive. Other polyester tape constructions can use different adhesives and have different temperature, bonding and removal characteristics.

When comparing products, check the complete tape construction. A similar backing or color does not mean that two tapes have the same performance. Confirm the exact product specifications rather than treating all polyester tapes as interchangeable.

What is polyester tape used for?

Powder coating masking: Polyester masking tape protects selected areas that must remain uncoated. Roll tape can be cut to length for continuous edges or larger protected areas. Evaluate edge lift, coating bleed and removal on the actual part.

Tape and film splicing: APT also lists splicing as an application for its polyester tape. Adhesion depends on the material being joined and the process conditions, so evaluate the tape on the specific paper, film or other surface.

Repeated circular masking: Pre-cut polyester masks offer a different format for repeated circles. Compare diameter, liner handling and the separate specifications of the die-cut product.

APT polyester roll specifications

Property Listed specification
Backing Polyester film, 2 mil
Adhesive Silicone
Total thickness 3.5 mil
Adhesion to steel 30 oz/in
Operating temperature range -73°C to 200°C (-99°F to 392°F)
Roll length 72 yards
Widths 0.5, 0.75, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 inches

The backing thickness measures the film alone; total thickness includes the adhesive. Use the total figure when checking clearance or the height of the masking edge.

How much heat can polyester masking tape handle?

The listed operating range for APT Polyester Powder Coating Tape rolls ends at 200°C (392°F). APT Polyester Masking Die Cuts have a separate listed rating of 204°C (400°F). Do not transfer a rating from one format to another.

A temperature limit alone does not establish suitable exposure duration or clean removal on every surface. Confirm the allowed dwell time, actual part temperature and removal conditions for the exact product. Include repeated heating cycles in your evaluation if your process uses them.

How to choose polyester tape for powder coating

  1. Define the protected area. Select a roll width that covers the area without interfering with adjacent coating edges. Consider pre-cut masks for repeated circular features.
  2. Check the surface. Identify the substrate and finish. Use a compatible cleaning method and allow the surface to dry before applying the tape.
  3. Match the process. Record the part temperature, time at temperature, chemicals and number of bake cycles. Compare these with the current technical data.
  4. Run a representative trial. Apply the tape to an actual part or equivalent sample and run the full coating, heating and cooling process.
  5. Inspect the result. Check adhesion, edge lift, coating bleed and residue after removal. Agree on acceptable results before production.

Roll tape or polyester masking die cuts?

Choose roll tape for continuous lines and masks cut to length. Consider Polyester Masking Die Cuts for repeated circles where a standard diameter suits the part. Check each product's thickness, temperature rating and available sizes separately.

When should I compare other masking materials?

If the process falls outside the polyester roll's listed range, or the trial shows unsuitable adhesion or removal, compare other constructions. Our High Temperature Masking Tape collection and high-temperature masking guide introduce additional materials and formats.
